moviejournal: the adventure of tintin

somehow i am a tintin fan, i dunno from when, probably from a very tender age. the innocent appearance and the cute dog and the hairdo probably got the young me. my neighbours reputed connectin to Herges probably played a part too. Oh come on who can resist a international comic phenomenon when your neighbor’s teacher is the author?! Having Stephen spielberg on the helm to do the silver screen probably seal the deal for me. my expectation of this film got sky high when even Margaret of the movie show on SBS is liking it. I’ve forgotten most of the storyline though, eager to refresh my memory in the cinema. The visual of this film is as good as any. CGI has come a long way truly since toy story. The camera angle is well placed in this film as well. Most of the chase scenes have multi-million dollar written all over it and Oscar aspirations from the start.

The story however is a bit dry. I think particularly the characters are being a bit one dimensional in comparison to the pixar characters. In the film tintin never really showed his soft side and is never afraid or frightened by whatever is thrown at them. I guess in a pixar storyboard, tintin would have his share of doubts and tribulations, but no in this one. Of course in a pixar film tintin would still come through shining, but spielberg’s interpretation, for me, lacks the human depth and emotional involvement that a true animated story would encompass. Is that the intention of the comic author though? I have to read of few of the comics I download last night to find out…
